Internet Research

I chose this magazine off the Internet as it has a picture of Zac Efron on. He is very well known by teenage girls. He is very attractive and starred in a extremely popular film. Girls would want to buy this magazine if they saw him on the front.

I chose this magazine as the colour scheme is very girly and stands out. It is fun and the picture adds to this. There is lots jammed onto this page which gives the reader the idea that there will be loads in there.

I chose this magazine as Beyonce is on the front. She is very well known and a good role models. Parents would be happier to see her on the front over someone like Brittany Spears. The colours clash which makes it all stand out and look exciting.

Treatment

Target Audience: My Music Magazine is aimed at young girls between 11 and 13. It is for girls who usually rely on their parents financially. They would use their pocket money to buy this magazine. They would have an interest in music, but more interested in the individual's lifestyle and image and they are heavily influenced by what they read. They would want to know the gossip about the individual over information about the music. This magazine is for girls that need role models to look up to. It is for readers that are confident in most aspects of life and have a wide group of friends however, they could sometimes use some advice to help them along. The reader will be interested in all aspects of music maybe starting to learn an instrument or getting involved in a school musical.

Form and Style: It will be an A4 colour magazine which contain celebrity interviews and gossip. Advice about beauty and how to look like their favourite girl singers. The colours will be very girly, like pink, purples and yellows. The colours will have to be bright to make the magazine eye catching. The cover lines will be about young female pop stars that are well known or attractive male pin ups from bands such as JLS. The writing will be a girly font for the front cover but will still make be a contemporary design. The front will be cluttered to give the idea that they are getting a good deal for their money. The magazine will sell for £2.00, which is cheaper than most rival teenage music magazines.

Themes and typical features: My magazine will have many regular features typical to that of a teen music magazine. Every issue will include a problem page where Lilly Allen writes back, there will be a page dedicated to starting out on a musical instrument (with music notes of popular songs), there will be a strong focus on attractive popular males and young inspirational females. My magazine will also round up the latest in the charts and feature the latest bands. Articles about popular bands and their lifestyle will be written as if talking to a friend. I will use language familiar to the target audience to make the magazine as useful and approachable as possible.

Potential advertisers: A range of brands will advertise in the magazine each week. These could include New Look, Sketchers, Mobile phone advertisements e.g. Carphone warehouse. Make-up brands e.g. Miss Sporty. HMV C.D, D.V.D and poster advertisement.

Editorial Team: The editorial team for my magazine will be made up of experienced writers and designers. My team will be made up of mostly females of different ages. However readers of the magazine will also be asked to contribute their own ideas. The aim of the team will to design fresh exciting ideas for each issue. They will have to make sure it is all relative to the target audience so that people keep buying the magazine.

Music Magazine Sales

These figures show that most of the sales for magazines decreased in 2009 compared to 2008. The only magazines that had more sales than in the previous year were 'Classic Rock' and 'The Fly'. And these only went up by a small percentage. This could be because people are saving their money as we are in recession. This means people would cut back on things that aren't essential. Another reason for the decrease is that people have more access to the Internet, where they can find out more about music. People can now download music off the Internet. This means that I have to make my magazine different from any others so that people will want to buy mine over any of the others. I will have to have a unique selling point such as a free gift as there is a very competitive market. I will have to find a gap in the market that no other magazine caters for.

Q- Textual Analysis

The mast head is in a square box , the white 'Q' is on a red background. This is part of the brand identity so people can identify the magazine quickly. The name for the magazine used to be 'cue' but they changed it to 'Q' so that it didn't get confused with a cue for snooker. Under 'Q' there is a slogan which the audience will always relate to the 'Q' magazine, which is easy to remember as it is catchy. 'A different take on music' this makes people think that this magazine is unique from any other. The colour scheme is very simple which makes it sophisticated this would attract an older more sophisticated target audience. There isn't loads squashed onto the front cover, it is very simple this puts the main focus on the masthead. The well known bands in the right hand corner are in bold. This is so that the reader can easily see what is going to be in the content of the magazine. This will also persuade them to buy Q. The word 'exclusive' is written in red writing so that it stands out this will make the reader think that they are going to find out something amazing thats never been heard before. 'SEXY BEAST' is ambiguous as it not only describes Lillen Allen but the the animals next to her. The use of black and the use of words like ' 'her wicked, wicked ways...' makes you think that inside you will find out more about Lilly Allen's dark side this will attract people to want to read inside. In the picture Lily Allen is half naked, it is sexy but still classy this will still attract the target audience especially the males. Lilly Allen has clear eye contact with the reader, its a very sexy look so it is like she is trying to seduce you into reading the magazine. The number 25 in the circle attracts the readers attention and makes them think that they are getting alot for their money. The price of the magazine is in very small print. This could be because the price is quite high or the buyer may not be bothered as to what price it is. This magazine is published by the same magazine as 'Karrang' but they are obviously created for two target audiences. Published by Baur London Lifestyle Ltd

Top of the Pops- Textual Analysis

The Masthead is covered up this shows that it is a well known magazine and that people buy it over and over again. The colour scheme is pink and yellow this shows that the magazine is aimed at young girls. There are also girl role models on the front cover which would attract young girls to choose this particular magazine as they desire to look like them or be like them. The bands and singers are all well known. The free gift of eye liner and eye shadow makes it clear who the target audience is. It will also make the girls think that this is their way of becoming more grown up and more like the celebs. It also makes the buyer think that they are getting more for their money and makes them choose this product over any other. The plastic cover makes you think that it is a good quality magazine. There are lots of free offers which will persuade people to buy it, young children often buy the magazine based on what and how many free things come with the magazine. This magazine does not concentrate specifically on the music, it concentrates on the actual people and how they look the way they do. It has pictures of the well known singers looking good and giving you tips how to look the same. From what we see on the front cover it portrays a view that the content inside will be quite immature. Competitions are there to add a sense of fun. Quizzes like 'Are your mates bad for you?' will intrigue the youngsters to look inside. The posters of the young male celebrities who are well known will make the readers want to buy it even more. It will make them feel cool and grown up. The cover lines 'Who's the real Rihanna?' and 'World Exclusive, The unseen side of superstar Cheryl' will make the reader think that they are finding out really exclusive stuff that nobody else would have heard before. 'Screams! Slip-ups! Surprises!' the alleteration makes it exciting and fun and the exclamation marks exagerate this. The price of the magazine is £2.30 which is a reasonal price. Young girls would be able to get this out of their pocket money or as a treat. It is published by BBC magazines. This is a well known brand as it had its own t.v show, which was extremley popular for a long period of time.

Kerrang-Textual Analysis

This magazine has a busy front cover. The masthead is an onomatopoeia as it sounds like a guitar noise a power chord. There is an exclamation mark after the word 'Kerrang' which emphasises the noise. There are cracks in the name this portrays the idea that the music is so loud that it has cracked the writing like glass. The tag line 'LIFE IS LOUD' emphasis all of this. The extras on the strap line help sell the magazine, it makes the buyer think they are getting more for their money. This is also put across with all of the pictures filling the page to make it look busy and full of good content. The advertisement of free posters will make someone buy this over another music magazine.
The main photo has clear eye contact with the reader, this draws you into the picture. It is a close up shot which emphasis this. The cover lines are in bright and bold colours so that it stands out. The cover lines match the pictures so it is all relevant. Kerrang is published by Baver Media group. Kerrang also has its own Radio station and t.v channel this shows that it is a very large well known brand.

Main Task Brief...

I have been set the task of producing the front page, the contents page and double page spread of a new music magazine. All of the content must be original. There has to be a minimum of four images.

Week 2:
  • Two textual analysis
  • Questionairre -to find out suitable target audience.

Week 3:

  • Font and colour
  • Research Draft layouts.

Week 4:
  • Photo Shoot, several different shots so there is a variety to choose from.

Construction

Week 5:
  • Three front cover drafts then choose which one I like the best.
  • Audience feedback.

Week 6-7:

  • Three double page spread drafts then choose which I like best.
  • Audience feedback.

Week 8:

  • Three contents page drafts then choose which I like best.
  • Bringing it all together and tweaks.

Evaluation

Week 10: Evaluation Drafting

This is how I plan to spend my time. But it is a flexible plan as I may need to spend longer on some aspects than arranged.
